Whether you are performing for the senior citizens at our outdoor noontime concerts, or for the young adult gallery-goers, or for kids at our Summer Arts Camp, you are simply wonderful!

Description of program:

Our school assembly/library program,Great Stories in Music, European Cruise (musical geography show)and our newest offering Musical Mysteries may be geared to any age group; pre-K through 12. In our premier program we explore the tales behind famous composers and their music. Listeners of all ages learn about the workings of the brass and woodwind families of instruments as well. During their "European Cruise," young listeners help "track" Double Play on their musical journey by plotting various countries with composers such as Mozart, Bach, Rossini and more! "Musical Mysteries" answers the question "where have I heard that tune before?" Demonstrations on the hose-horn and wooden flute show the origins of the flute and tuba....some musical terms discussed are: vibration, valves, reed, composer and conductor. Students will also have the opportunity to learn something of the life of Maggie, Patrick's guide-dog!

Educational offerings: instrumental/band clinics. Residency workshops: "Science of Sound" introduces the basic principles of acoustics. An impromptu forming of a "bottle and hose band" demonstrates the 4 characteristics of sound. The goal of our "Reading, 'Riting' and Rhythm" workshop is to create a new work using a pre-existing melody. Text (poetry or prose) and theme supplied by students and/or teachers. (Residency length varies from 3-20 days).

In addition, Double Play presents some 150 performances annually for colleges, churches and retirement communities. All programs intersperse music with humorous and historical anecdotes.

About Double Play flute and tuba:

As the world's only professional flute and tuba duo, this husband and wife team travels the country extensively each year, entertaining audiences of all ages. Double Play reaches thousands of students through their assembly programs and residency activities. They have performed in 45 states, the District of Columbia and Mexico. In their twenty-three year history, performances of note include appearances at Arizona State University, Reinhardt College (Georgia), Carnegie Library (Pittsburgh), University of South Dakota (Vermillion), Glema Mahr Arts Center (Kentucky) and as concerto soloists with the Sierra Vista Symphony and Sun City Concert Band in Arizona. Recent residencies include Patrick Henry Middle School (Sioux Falls, SD) and the St.Charles City-County Public Library System (Missouri).  Fall touring schedule includes Northern Virginia, Southern Florida, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Amy Ridings, flutist, is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory and a former member of Quintessence Chamber Ensemble. She has appeared as soloist with the New American Chamber Orchestra and the Bach Aria Group and was principal flutist of Michigan's Macomb Symphony.

Patrick Sciannella, tubaist, holds a master's degree from the Eastman School of Music and is a former member of the Genesee and Southwest Brass Quintets. Despite a severe visual handicap, he has performed with the Chautauqua and Phoenix Symphony Orchestras. Maggie, Patrick's guide-dog, is a distinguished graduate of Guiding Eyes for the Blind!
