In our premier program we explore the tales behind famous composers and their music. Listeners of all ages learn about the workings of the brass and woodwind families of instruments as well. During their "European Cruise," young listeners help "track" Double Play on their musical journey by plotting various countries with composers such as Mozart, Bach, Rossini and more! "Musical Mysteries" answers the question "where have I heard that tune before?" Demonstrations on the hose-horn and wooden flute show the origins of the flute and tuba....some musical terms discussed are: vibration, valves, reed, composer and conductor. Students will also have the opportunity to learn something of the life of Mustang, Patrick's guide-dog!Educational offerings: instrumental/band clinics. Residency workshops: "Science of Sound" introduces the basic principles of acoustics. An impromptu forming of a "bottle and hose band" demonstrates the 4 characteristics of sound. The goal of our "Reading, 'Riting' and Rhythm" workshop is to create a new work using a pre-existing melody. Text (poetry or prose) and theme supplied by students and/or teachers. (Residency length varies from one-week to one-half school year). In addition, Double Play presents some 200 performances annually for colleges, churches and retirement communities.
