An anti-bullying play about tolerance and love. »

Social conflict pervades our schools. In some ways, students have become somewhat numb to the anti-bullying, inclusive messages of their teachers and principals. 'Gifted' delivers the point in a way students can relate to. It's about more than just bullying; it's about breaking down differences and stereotypes in subtle and meaningful ways. Gifted delivers the message with humor and poignancy, and the students hear it.
--- Michael Shapiro| Principal Shepard Middle School

The Steel Beam Theatre of Saint Charles introduces a traveling theater troupe that will perform a play exploring the impact that bullying has on the bullied, the bullies themselves and the bystanders.

Written by Tommy Lee Johnston and directed by the theater’s Artistic Director Donna Steele, the play “Gifted” takes place in a high school class of gifted students where a substitute teacher faces his past as a former bully.

In the play, Mr. Jenks revisits his high school alma mater as a substitute teacher for a class of highly “Gifted” students. Discovering the passage of time hasn’t erased his own painful experiences as a bully, he now faces a class of kids whose lives and experiences all too closely resemble those of the very students he taunted.  “Gifted” examines the many social issues kids face every day. Finding a place, a meaning, and at times a sense of self are all explored in this one act play. Students, Principals, Teachers, and parents have all been touched by the message and issues “Gifted” delivers.

“This play takes a hard look at many of the issues that kids face today,” said Steele. “The play is about  bullying, tolerance, acceptance and love.”
